Getting Your EINNew Telephone and Fax Numbers for Obtaining your EIN
While IRS allows a sole proprietor, with no employees, to use their Social Security number in lieu of an EIN number, computer filing no longer makes this practical. Plus, the number is required on many other business forms so we suggest you obtain one for your business today.
Taxpayers can now call a single, nationwide, toll-free telephone number 1-800-829-4933 to get an EIN assigned while on the phone. IRS customer service representatives in three Service Centers respond to taxpayer calls Monday through Friday from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. local time (taxpayers in Alaska and Hawaii will need to call 7:30 A.M. to 5: 30 P.M. pacific time) SPECIAL NOTE The Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number, should be completed before the call is initiated. A form SS-4 can be downloaded at http://www.irs.gov Type SS-4 In the box "Search Forms & Publications for:" Taxpayers outside the United States will continue to call the Philadelphia Service Center at (215) 516-6999. Taxpayers can obtain an EIN number within 4 business days, by faxing Form SS-4 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the location for their state's application. If Form SS-4 is mailed, it should be submitted four to five weeks before the number is needed. The mailing address and fax numbers are listed below.
